About AOL Journals

You can think of your AOL Journal, often called a “blog” (short for “weblog”), as a kind of dynamic home page. It’s a place in the AOL® service where you can keep a diary on almost any subject, adding comments and commentary as you go. You can illustrate your AOL Journal with pictures from AOL® Pictures or AOL Journals, and you can let your readers know how you’re feeling — even what kind of music you’re listening to. The Blog This link allows you to add some AOL® Web pages to your journal instantly. Simply click the Blog This link in the upper right of the page you wish to add.

AOL has made keeping a journal easy. You can add entries directly on the page, or you can send them in by instant message (IM). When you start an AOL Journal, you have the option of adding a special AIM® IM Robot™, or AIM Bot, to your AIM® Buddy List® feature, and the IMs you send appear almost instantly in your AOL Journal. You can even call in your entries using a new feature called AOLbyPhone™.

When you start yours, you can have the AOL service send an e–mail to other AOL members who are likely readers. They’ll learn what the basic subject of your AOL Journal is and how to get there. They can read and see what you’ve posted, and they can also add comments of their own. You have to be an AOL member to start an AOL Journal, or to get the e–mail announcement, but anyone with access to the Internet can view a public AOL Journal and add comments to it.

Anyone who knows the URL can read a public journal. Private journals are open only to people you specify.

As the AOL Journal owner, you can set an alert that notifies you when a comment is added. You can also add an alert that readers see to tell them when you post a new entry. If you change your AOL Journal from private to public, your invitees receive an alert to let them know.

Because AOL Journals can be added to continuously, they can get very large very quickly. For this reason, only the most recent entries are shown. You can always see everything, though, just by clicking the Older Entries link.
